The good news? They’re predictable. Hyatt tells you exactly when you can confirm a suite: before arrival. This makes family travel planning a lot easier.
Let’s make sure you only use these precious perks when they really count.
Here’s my favorite cards to help you start earning those points for stays, plus a bonus that’s AMAZING for lounge access while you get to where you are going.
What Is a Suite Upgrade Award?
A Suite Upgrade Award (SUA) lets you instantly confirm an upgrade to a hotel’s standard suite, at the time of booking, for a stay up to seven consecutive nights at the same property.
Not a “maybe” or a “we’ll do our best.”
It’s a guaranteed upgrade, confirmed by Hyatt when you book (as long as a standard suite is available for sale).
You can apply them to:
✅ Paid stays booked at eligible rates
✅ Free night stays booked with points (not certificates)
✅ Guest of Honor stays if you’re the one checking in
Keep in mind: SUAs can’t be applied to free-night award redemptions (like Cat 1–4 or 1–7 awards) and can’t be used at vacation-ownership or select small-brand Hyatt properties (for example, some Miraval or Caption by Hyatt locations).
How Do You Earn Suite Upgrade Awards?
You earn Hyatt Suite Upgrade Awards through Hyatt Milestone Rewards:
Award Options at 40 Nights
Award Options at 50 Nights
What You Get at 60 Nights
You’ll automatically receive both rewards — no selection needed. Globalist status unlocks free breakfast, waived resort fees, room upgrades, and 4 p.m. checkout through the following year.
Award Options at 70 / 80 / 90+ Nights
Each SUA is valid through the end of the next February after the year you earned it (roughly 14 months). You’ll see the exact expiration date in your Hyatt account.If you cancel a stay where an SUA was applied, Hyatt will usually redeposit the award, with the original expiration date intact.
Can You Stack a Suite Upgrade Award With Guest of Honor?
Yes you can. If you are the one staying.
You can:
✅ Book an award stay
✅ Apply a Guest of Honor (if you’re booking under someone else for perks)
✅ Then also apply a Hyatt Suite Upgrade Award to guarantee the suite
But if you gift Guest of Honor to someone else without being there, you can’t attach your SUA to their stay unless you’re listed as the primary guest.
💡 Quick reminder: SUAs only apply if “standard suite” inventory is available when booking. If it’s sold out, Hyatt can’t attach the award until space opens.

- You need space — not just want it.
Kids, snorers, early risers? A living room = peace. - You’re staying more than 2–3 nights.
Longer stays maximize confirmed space value. - You’re traveling during peak season/holidays.
Complimentary upgrades are toughest then. - You’re celebrating something special.
Anniversary or first big family vacation? Guarantee it. - You’re at an “all-suites” property.
Think Hyatt Regency Maui or Hyatt Ziva — huge “standard suites.”

SUAs lock in space before you travel, removing the stress of hoping for upgrades — crucial for family trips when space = sanity.
They shine on longer or high-demand stays where suites can cost hundreds more per night.
🚫 Save a Suite Upgrade Award when…
- The hotel has few suites.
Low inventory = low success odds. - It’s only one night.
Unless it’s high-value, hold it for a longer stay. - The property upgrades generously.
Some hotels upgrade Globalists anyway. - You haven’t checked the price difference.
Sometimes paying cash for a suite is cheaper.
💡 Why to Hold Off
Save SUAs for trips that truly need them — longer vacations, busy seasons, or kid-heavy itineraries.
Skip using one where a standard room fits or upgrade odds are already high.
Mom tip: A little planning goes a long way — use SUAs where they’ll make the biggest impact on comfort and sanity.
