If you’re here because you were trying to learn how to use Alaska Airlines miles, you are not behind, you’re just catching the middle of a big change.
Alaska’s loyalty program no longer exists under its old name.
The miles you used to earn through Alaska Airlines are now part of a new program called Atmos Rewards, which was created when Alaska and Hawaiian Airlines officially merged into one airline family.
And while that sounds confusing, the good news is:
You didn’t lose your the value of your miles or your status.
It just moved.
If you’re brand new to points and miles, my free Beginner’s Guide is still the easiest place to start.
What Happened to Alaska Airlines Miles?
Alaska’s original loyalty program (Mileage Plan) was officially replaced by Atmos Rewards.
That just means:
- Your Alaska miles became Atmos points
- Your account didn’t disappear
- Your balance converted 1:1
- Your elite status moved over with you
- You now earn and redeem under the new program name
So don’t worry! Your “Alaska miles” are still there, they’re just called something different now.
Are My Old Alaska Miles Still Good?
Absolutely!
Nothing expired, or lost value, or reset.
Everything transferred directly into the new system.
If you log into what used to be your Alaska account, you’ll now see Atmos Rewards instead.
It’s the same points, just a new label.
Is This Bad News or Good News?
For families… it’s mostly good news.
Why?
Because Atmos combined:
- Alaska’s route network
- Hawaiian’s island routes
- Partner airline access
That gives you more flexibility than before and more ways to use the same stash of points since it’s all under one currency now.
Think of it like this:
Your range has now expanded because so has Alaska airlines.
Where Should You Go Next?
The real question now isn’t, “How do Alaska miles work?”
It’s, “How do I use Atmos Rewards for family travel?”
I wrote a fully updated, easy-to-understand guide that explains:
- What Atmos Rewards actually is
- What stayed the same
- What changed
- What families should do now
- How to earn points
- How to use them for flights
- What still works (and what doesn’t)

If You Want the Best Strategy Right Now
If you don’t want to read another guide just yet, here’s the simple answer:
Atmos Rewards is still worth using, especially if:
- You fly to Hawaii
- You live on the West Coast
- You take domestic trips regularly
- You like using airline partnerships for international travel
But, I never recommend relying on airline programs alone.
That’s why I teach families to start with flexible points first, then layer in airline programs like Atmos for specific trips.
You can learn all about it by reading Why You Never Have Enough Miles and How Transferable Points Solve that Problem.
