When that welcome bonus lands in your account, it feels exciting…until you start wondering, “Okay, but how do I actually use these points?”
I know it can feel overwhelming, but I’m here to help. When we earned our first big travel card bonus, I had no idea how to use 75k credit card points for travel. So today, I’m breaking down real trips our family of six has booked with points, plus what you could do with exactly 75,000 points.
If you’re brand new to points, my Beginner’s Guide will help you get started without feeling overwhelmed.
A Quick Note for Bigger Families
We’re a family of six, which often means two hotel rooms. That can make points stretch less, but the trips are still incredible.
If your family fits in one room, your 75,000 points will go even further. I’ll share both one-room and big-family examples so you can see the difference.
10 Real Trips We’ve Taken With Points
These are actual bookings from our travels: what we used, what 75,000 points could have covered, and what it would have cost in cash.
🏨 Luxury Resort Stay in Carlsbad, CA (Near LEGOLAND)
- Used: 120,000 points = 30k × 2 rooms × 2 nights
- What 75k covers at 30k/night: 1 room for 2 nights (60k) with 15k left over
- Alt scenario: If you find off-peak at 25k/night, 75k would cover 3 nights for 1 room
- Cash value (est.): $3,796 total ≈ $949 per room
- Value per point: ~$3,796 ÷ 120,000 ≈ 3.16¢/point (excellent)
- Out-of-pocket: $0 for the award rooms (Hyatt waives resort fees/taxes on pure points stays; parking & incidentals extra)
✈️ Business Class Flight to Rome
- Used: 60,000 points for 1 lie-flat seat
- 75k coverage: Yes. 75,000 points would still cover a business class seat to Europe on many award charts, often even on peak dates
- Cash value: $2,800 for transatlantic business class fare; that’s about 4.67¢ per point ($2,800 ÷ 60,000)
- Out-of-pocket: $257 in taxes/fees is realistic for a Europe business class award, especially with carriers like Air France/KLM or Lufthansa that have moderate surcharges
✈️ Premium Economy Flight Home from Venice
- Used: 110,000 points for 2 seats = 55,000 points per seat
- 75k coverage: Yes, if one seat costs 55k, then 75k would easily cover 1 premium economy seat, with ~20k points left over
- Cash value: $2,450 for both seats = $1,225 per seat
- Value per point: $2,450 ÷ 110,000 ≈ 2.23¢ per point, a solid redemption for premium economy
- Out-of-pocket: $73 total in taxes/fees
🎢 Universal Orlando Hotel With Express Passes
- Used: 182,683 points ÷ (2 rooms × 2 nights) ≈ 45,670 points per room per night
- 75k coverage: Yes, 75,000 points would cover about 1 room for 1 night (with ~29,330 points left over)
- Cash value: $1,860.55 total = about $465.14 per room per night
- Value per point: $1,860.55 ÷ 182,683 ≈ 1.02¢ per point, which is reasonable for a hotel redemption with bundled Express Passes
- Out-of-pocket: $0
🏖 Beachfront Resort in Kauai
- Used: 158,000 points ÷ (2 rooms × 2 nights) = 39,500 points per room per night
- 75k coverage: 39,500 × 2 nights = 79,000 points, so 75k falls just short of covering 1 room for 2 nights
- Cash value: $5,141 total ÷ 4 rooms/night = $1,285.25 per room per night
- Value per point: $5,141 ÷ 158,000 ≈ 3.25¢ per point, excellent value for Hyatt
- Out-of-pocket: $0
