It started with a moment of sticker shock. I was pricing out a Universal Orlando vacation for our family of six. When I saw the total, I actually laughed out loud. Not a fun laugh. The “surely this is a mistake” kind.

To do Universal right, we wanted Express Passes (a must during peak times), an on-site hotel, enough tickets for all six of us, flights, parking, extras…and the total just kept climbing

**SHORTCUT** : If you’re just here for the list of cards that save you money on theme parks, find my list HERE, and the current elevated offers HERE.

If you’re used to strategies that save at Disney, Universal requires a totally different mindset.

  • No gift cards are accepted online for hotel or ticket purchases
  • No DVC-style rental market for deluxe hotel discounts
  • Fewer stacking promotions and limited seasonal sales

So how do you save? Let’s go over the best ways I’ve found.

  1. Use a great welcome bonus to offset the costs
  2. Stay on property so Express Passes are included (#5 helps even more with this)
  3. Buy multi-day passes through a company that codes as travel like Getaway Today
  4. Annual Pass discounts
  5. Travel portals (when available)

Welcome Offers

Welcome offers are one of the most powerful ways families can cut the cost of theme park tickets because they can generate hundreds of dollars in travel value from everyday spending. Instead of slowly earning rewards over years, a single welcome offer can often produce $750–$1,000 worth of points or travel credits in just a few months.

The types of cards that work best for this strategy are:

Capital One cards (because purchases code as travel and can be erased)
Cash back cards
– A specific pay-yourself-back card that allows you to pay yourself back at more than 1 cent per point. Find it HERE

I update my Best Offers page every month so you can see what’s currently elevated.

Hotel Options: On-Site Perks vs. Off-Site Savings

It seems weird to think staying at a premium hotel at Universal means you can save, but it’s true. If you stay at an off-property hotel, you can save on costs by staying with points, but if you stay at a premium property, Express Passes are included in your stay, which can be a huge savings vs. purchasing them outright.

Hotels With Express Passes

Hard Rock, Royal Pacific, and Portofino Bay are currently the only Universal hotels that offer Unlimited Express Passes and Early Park Admission for everyone in the room. If you are visiting in peak season, this can save you at least a day in the park because you can skip the lines. This option is also especially helpful for families with young kids. Express Passes can run hundreds of dollars, so staying at a hotel that provides them is a huge savings.

However, premium hotels also come with a higher price tag. We save on this by using a card that gets us up to 2 cents per point in the travel portal. Find my favorite travel portal cards HERE.

Express Pass Cost Comparison

At first glance, Universal’s premier hotels look expensive. But when you compare the cost of buying Express Passes separately, the math can actually work in your favor.

Premier Hotel Stay
$7,242

4 nights in two rooms at full price.

Express Passes for everyone in the room are included.

Buying Express Pass Separately
$3,096

For 6 people across two park days.

This cost is in addition to your hotel stay.

Why this can save money: Express Pass dramatically reduces wait times, which means you can often experience the same number of rides in fewer park days. For many families, that means buying fewer ticket days and avoiding the cost of an extra day in the park. When you combine this with an Annual Passholder hotel discount, staying at a premier Universal hotel can actually be cheaper than buying Express Passes separately.

Use Points for Nearby Hotels

If you have older kids and time isn’t an issue, there are some great hotels close by Universal Florida. They don’t come with the Express Pass, but the price tag is not as high either. However, keep in mind you might have to buy an extra day or two of tickets without Express Pass.

There are so hotel many options to choose from with free breakfast and/or complimentary transportation, but my favorite is this one.

Hyatt House Across from Universal Orlando Resort

Family-Friendly Accommodations

  • Specialty Family King Suite: Features a king bed, bunk beds, and a sofa bed, comfortably sleeping six guests.
  • One-Bedroom Suites: Offer two queen beds and a sofa bed, providing ample space for families.
  • Suites come with full kitchens, ideal for preparing meals and snacks.
  • Guests can enjoy a free full breakfast buffet each morning, featuring a variety of hot and cold items.

Ticket-Saving Strategies: Points, Discounts, & Bundles

Buy Discounted Tickets Through Resellers

Authorized third-party resellers like Get Away Today often offer better pricing than directly through Universal, especially if you bundle the hotel through them as well.

  • Adult 2-day Park-to-Park: $360 vs. $400 direct from Universal
  • Kids: $349 vs. $389 direct

These purchases code as travel, so you can erase them with Capital One miles or another card with a pay yourself back feature. I can’t name it directly, but it’s a co-branded card on THIS LIST.

Cash back cards always work great too, especially paired with a great welcome offer!

Annual Passes Unlock Hotel Deals

Here’s a major savings trick, especially if you have a longer trip planned. Only one person in your group needs to upgrade to an Annual Pass to unlock discounts of up to 40% on on-site hotels. Notice it says “up to.” The amount of discount you get on your price will depend on which hotel with Express Pass you are staying with and the time of year.

There are four tiers of annual passes, each at different price points. Annual passes could be a whole separate blog post, but consider the time of year your family is going. Make sure you don’t go during any blackout dates. All of the pricing can be found here.

Universal Pass Types at a Glance
If you’re comparing passes, the biggest difference usually comes down to blackout dates. Here’s the simple version:
Seasonal Pass
Most Restrictive
Allows access during certain seasons, which means there are blackout dates during busy times like spring break, parts of summer, and Christmas break.
Power Pass
Fewer Blackouts
Cuts those blackout dates down quite a bit, giving you more flexibility than the Seasonal Pass.
Preferred Pass
Best for Theme Parks
Has no blackout dates for the theme parks, but still includes blackout dates for Volcano Bay.
Premier Pass
Most Flexible
Has no blackout dates, making it the most flexible option.

Seasonal Pass: ~$450

Upgrade from 3-day ticket: ~$38

Preferred Pass: ~$540 | Upgrade cost: ~$128
We budgeted $100 for the upgrade and saved **$2,900** on our hotel stay.

***IMPORTANT info! If you buy your tickets through a third-party vendor like Getaway Today or even through points with a travel portal (still third party), you can ONLY upgrade to an annual pass IN PERSON. They cannot do it even over the phone. Then if you pre-book your hotel, you book at the annual pass rate and show them proof of annual pass BEFORE your stay is finished. You must book directly through Universal to get the annual pass rate. Your annual pass also MUST be upgraded before you use all your days at the park. At this time annual passes DO NOT include Epic Universe.

Book Using a Travel Portal

If you have flexible points from certain cards, you can book tickets through a travel portal.

I normally don’t recommend using travel portals because you can get a lot more value out of transferring your flexible points directly, but that doesn’t apply at Universal.

Certain travel portals, especially on premium cards, can get you more than one cent per point. Due to affiliate rules, I can’t name my favorites specifically, but you can find them in THIS LIST.

A $122 one-day ticket can be booked for just 8,146 points in a travel portal. If you want to get to Universal, this is another great way to save.

Other Costs

Flying for Less: Use Points and the Companion Pass

We usually fly Southwest and maximize the Companion Pass, which lets one person fly free with you (just pay taxes). For our family of six:

  • Points cover 4 tickets
  • 2 companions fly free (we have two companion passes)
  • Taxes: $11.20/person
➡️ Total for 6: $67.20 out of pocket

No Companion Pass? Use points from flexible programs and book via portals or transfer to airline partners.

Parking, Food, and Extras: The Sneaky Costs

These smaller expenses add up fast, but here’s how we keep them in check:

Parking

  • Between $15-36 for self parking and $28-45 for valet parking, depending on the hotel
  • Off-site hotel guests: expect ~$30/night at Universal
  • Uber is also an exceptional idea that can save you a bundle, especially if you are staying on property

Dining

  • Estimate: $600–$900 for a family of 6
  • Pack snacks, share meals, and eat breakfast at the hotel when included. If staying at Hyatt House with a kitchen = save even more

Miscellaneous

  • We budget ~$200 for extras (souvenirs, unexpected expenses)

Full Budget Breakdown for a Family of 6 (Fall Break Example)
Category Full Price With Strategy
6 Universal Tickets (3-Day Combo incl. Epic Universe) ~$2,432 149,600 points (redeemed via travel portal)
Premier Hotel (4 nights × 2 rooms) $7,242.64 $4,345.58 (Annual Passholder discount)
Express Pass (6 people) ~$3,096 Included with Premier hotel stay
Annual Pass Upgrade (1 ticket) $0 $100 (estimated upgrade)
Flights (Roundtrip for 6) ~$1,200 $67.20 (points + Companion Pass)
Parking (4 nights) ~$100 Included / minimal
Food & Dining $600–$900 (estimated)
Additional Expenses $200 (souvenirs, snacks, misc.)
Total $14,170.64 $6,612.78 + 149,600 points

Note: Prices vary based on travel dates and availability. These numbers are based on October 2025 searches.

Bottom Line: There’s No One Right Way—Only Smart Ways

Whether you’re using points to erase Universal tickets, booking hotels through travel portals, or unlocking discounts with an Annual Pass, the key is stacking smart strategies.

You don’t have to do everything. But even combining a few of these tactics can save thousands.

Need help mapping out your own Universal game plan? I’ve got you.
