There’s nothing like a travel day morning to test your sanity.

One kid’s missing a shoe. Someone’s crying because we didn’t bring that kind of granola bar. You’re running through the mental list of things you swore you wouldn’t forget, and your husband is calmly sipping coffee like boarding time is optional.

I’ve done this enough to know: the chaos is part of the deal. But I’ve also learned how to make travel mornings feel a lot less stressful—with a few routines and one small habit that’s made a surprisingly big difference.

If you’re still in the phase where travel feels overwhelming, my free beginner guide is a great place to start—especially if you want to save money while you’re at it.

It All Starts a Week Before

I don’t wait until the night before. My brain can’t handle that.

I need a full week of prep—not because packing takes that long, but because mentally, I need the margin. It helps me avoid that panicked “I’m forgetting something” feeling and gives me time to make Amazon orders, dig out last season’s swimsuits, and start my mental checklist.

Throughout the week, I:

  • Set out outfits
  • Order extra snacks or travel-size products
  • Check lounge access and make sure our travel cards are in my Threads Wallet
  • Charge anything that charges
  • Print confirmations (or save them to a Notes folder I can access offline)

The Night Before: Controlled Chaos

This is when things get real.

I charge everything—iPads, headphones, the backup charger, toothbrushes, watches—and I pack them all in this electronics organizer. It’s honestly changed everything.

I used to forget chargers constantly. Now I keep a dedicated set of cables and a power bank that live inside that organizer. I never unpack it between trips—it just stays ready. No more unplugging things at 3 a.m. or wondering if I left a cord in the hotel room.

Other night-before essentials:

  • Lay out travel-day clothes for everyone (yes, even the big kids)
  • Set up grab-and-go breakfast (protein bars, fruit, water bottles)
  • Pack a small “emergency” bag with gum, snacks, wipes, and a change of clothes for at least one kid

Morning of: Let’s Roll

We usually book early flights, so my goal is always calm-ish chaos.

I wake up around 4 a.m. (earlier for international), get myself completely ready, and then wake up the kids. I do a quick scan: passports, IDs, Relyte in the water bottle, snacks in the bag, headphones packed.

I’ll turn on music in the kitchen, double-check the house is locked up, and give everyone a final bathroom reminder before we head out.

And the One Thing I Always Forget…

A charger.

For years, I would forget one critical cord almost every time. It didn’t matter how many lists I made—there was always something left behind. That’s why the electronics organizer became non-negotiable.

Now I keep a spare charger and all the essentials stocked in that one bag—so I never have to think about it again. I don’t unpack it between trips. I don’t use it for everyday life. It lives in my travel bag, ready to go.

It’s a small thing, but it’s saved me more times than I can count.

Final Thoughts

Travel mornings will never be relaxing—especially with kids. But they can feel manageable. And honestly? A little bit of planning goes a long way in protecting your peace.

Start early. Keep your essentials packed. And if all else fails, remember that there’s probably a charger stand in the airport lounge (been there).

more about me

I’m a former travel agent and airline employee turned points and miles enthusiast, here to help families travel more—for way less. With four kids of my own, I know how hard (and pricey!) it can be to plan a trip that actually works. That’s where points come in.

We’ve used them to visit 24 countries (Hawaii’s still my favorite), and I love showing other families how to do the same. On this site, you’ll find simple guides, smart tips, and one-on-one help if you want it. Whether you're just starting or ready to dive deeper, I'm here to make it easier—and more fun.

Let’s start checking off that bucket list.
