5 Things I Always Pack for Points-Funded Family Travel

When we book flights and hotels with points, people usually want to know the “how.” But once we’re past the strategy part (and if you’re curious, this beginner guide is a great place to start), the next question is usually: “Okay, what do you pack?”

I’m a pretty minimal packer, but over time, I’ve found a few non-negotiables—items that just make travel feel better. Especially when you’re using points to book the big stuff, it’s nice to have the little things dialed in too.

Here are five things I always bring on our points-funded family trips—and why they’ve earned a permanent spot in my travel bag.

1. My Seatback Travel Sleep Mask

This genius mask straps to the back of the airplane seat and holds your head upright while you sleep. It basically replaces the bulky neck pillow and works so much better for long-haul flights.

It doesn’t hurt my shoulders, it folds down flat, and it’s the only sleep setup I’ve tried that actually lets me rest on a plane without waking up sore. This one’s a game-changer.

2. Relyte Electrolytes

I drink Relyte at home, but I rely on it even more when I travel. I’ve always struggled with staying hydrated—add in airport snacks, busy travel days, and heat or altitude, and I feel it fast.

This stuff keeps my energy up and my digestion on track, and it’s the first thing I drink every morning on vacation. It doesn’t taste like your average flavored water—it’s salty and a little intense at first—but once your body gets used to it, you’ll notice the difference. It’s like a zap to the brain, in the best way.

3. Quiet Comfort Noise-Canceling Headphones

At home, I love my AirPods for working out and everyday mom life—but when I travel, I switch to these over-the-ear noise-canceling headphones. They’re so much more comfortable for long flights, and the sound quality is unmatched.

They don’t hurt your ears like in-ear headphones can after hours of use, and I love that they work wirelessly or with a cord, depending on the device. Whether I’m watching a movie, listening to an audiobook, or just trying to tune out the cabin noise, these are essential.

4. Portable Charger

This portable charger never leaves my purse. It’s saved me more times than I can count, whether I forgot my regular charger or just burned through battery taking videos of the kids.

It charges multiple devices, has a digital display, and it’s been a lifesaver—not just for me, but for other people I’ve handed it to in airports who didn’t bring one. Highly recommend.

5. Threads Wallet + Mini Salt Kit

I usually keep my wallet pretty minimal at home, but travel requires more cards—especially if I’m using one for lounge access, another for Wi-Fi credits, or taking advantage of airline-specific perks.

That’s why I love this Threads Wallet. It clips onto a carabiner, keeps all the important cards together, and doesn’t take up space.

Bonus: I also bring my mini salt container. I know it’s weird, but a private chef once told me how much difference a quality salt can make, and now I bring my own. Threads makes a holder that fits the salt container perfectly, so it clips right on with my wallet and comes with me everywhere.

Final Thoughts

You don’t need a million gadgets to travel well—but having a few thoughtful, reliable items in your bag makes a huge difference. These five are always with me, no matter where we go or how many points we used to get there.

more about me

I’m a former travel agent and airline employee turned points and miles enthusiast, here to help families travel more—for way less. With four kids of my own, I know how hard (and pricey!) it can be to plan a trip that actually works. That’s where points come in.

We’ve used them to visit 24 countries (Hawaii’s still my favorite), and I love showing other families how to do the same. On this site, you’ll find simple guides, smart tips, and one-on-one help if you want it. Whether you're just starting or ready to dive deeper, I'm here to make it easier—and more fun.

Let’s start checking off that bucket list.
