My Take

This is the Delta card I see most families move to once they’ve flown Delta a few times and want the benefits to feel more “real.” If you live near a hub and you’re taking at least one or two Delta trips a year, the Companion Certificate is the feature that can make this card feel like a no-brainer — but only if you’ll actually use it.

I also like that it keeps things simple. You still get the “make airport days easier” benefits (like a free checked bag and priority boarding), and you get a clear path to squeeze more value out of a trip you were already going to take.

For a bigger-picture look at how I think about Delta cards overall — especially if you live at a hub — read my full breakdown here: Delta Credit Cards Explained: What I’d Do Living at a Hub .

Why Families Love It

  • Companion Certificate (each year after renewal): A powerful benefit if you can use it for a trip you’d book anyway (taxes/fees apply; restrictions apply).
  • 15% off Delta award flights: When booking with miles directly through Delta.
  • First checked bag free: Real savings on round-trips for families.
  • Priority boarding: Helps you get settled before the plane fills up.
  • Global Entry or TSA PreCheck® credit: Helpful for smoother travel days.
  • No foreign transaction fees: Useful for international travel.
Terms apply. Enrollment required for select benefits. Companion Certificate value depends on route availability and fare rules.
Companion Certificate tip (quick and practical):
If you wouldn’t realistically book a domestic round-trip on Delta in the next 12 months, don’t buy this card “for the certificate.” But if you’re already doing one trip a year (family visit, spring break, a quick beach trip), this benefit can be where the math starts to work.
