Losing luggage is every traveler's nightmare, but when you're traveling with kids, it can feel even more overwhelming. Not only are you keeping track of your own bags, but you’re responsible for everyone else’s, too! Despite the best planning, sometimes bags take an unexpected detour. The good news? If you’re prepared, you can handle it like a pro.

Prepare for the Worst So You Have a Plan

I prefer not to check bags, but when traveling as a family, sometimes the convenience outweighs the risk of lost luggage. This is especially true when flying airlines that allow free checked bags! If you do check luggage, here’s how to minimize stress and set yourself up for success.

Use the Right Travel Credit Card – Many travel rewards credit cards offer baggage protection benefits. Here’s a list of some of my favorite travel credit cards that can help give you extra peace of mind when checking bags.

Pack Essentials in a Carry-On – Keep valuables, medications, a change of clothes, and anything essential with you. If you have little ones, be sure to pack extra diapers, snacks, and swimsuits for immediate pool access upon arrival!

Hold Onto Your Boarding Pass & Baggage Claim Ticket – If your bag goes missing, these are critical for filing a reimbursement claim.

Use a Tracking Device – Placing an Apple AirTag or similar tracker inside your luggage can help you pinpoint its exact location.

Lost Luggage? Here’s What to Do

If your bag doesn’t show up, don’t panic (or at least try not to!). Follow these steps to get it back as quickly as possible:

1- Confirm Your Bag is Actually Lost

✔ Wait at least 45 minutes at baggage claim.
✔ Check nearby conveyor belts.
✔ Use the airline’s app or website to track your bag.
✔ If you have a tracker, check its location.

2- Save Receipts & Justify Purchases

✔ Most airlines require receipts for reimbursement.
✔ Be mindful of what you charge—airline claims take time.
✔ Some airlines allow reimbursement without receipts for lost bags after five days.

3- File a Claim BEFORE Leaving the Airport

✔ Go directly to the baggage service desk.
✔ Provide your baggage claim ticket and boarding pass.
✔ Get a reference number and tracking information.
✔ Ask how the airline will reimburse you for purchases.
✔ Find out how and when your bag will be delivered.

4- Use Your Credit Card Travel Insurance

If you booked your flight with a travel rewards credit card, you may be eligible for baggage delay or loss coverage.

Travel Insurance: Check your policy’s baggage delay and loss coverage. Most require receipts.
Credit Card Insurance: If you paid for your ticket with an eligible travel card, you may qualify for reimbursement. Here’s a list of cards that offer strong travel insurance benefits.

5- Know Your Rights

Domestic Flights: Airlines must reimburse you for reasonable expenses while you wait for your luggage—up to $3,800.
International Flights: Under the Montreal Convention, reimbursement is capped at approximately $1,780.

6- Be Persistent & Follow Up

✔ Call customer service daily for updates.
✔ Use social media if the airline is unresponsive.
✔ Keep detailed records of all interactions.

American Airlines Covers up to $3,800 for reasonable expenses (receipts required for purchases over $100).
Delta Reimburses reasonable expenses but doesn’t set a clear limit.
Southwest Offers reimbursement for reasonable expenses but is vague on limits.
United Covers interim expenses for delays and up to $3,800 with receipts ($1,500 without receipts for missing bags over five days).
