How to Get Started as a Points and Miles Mom (It’s Easier Than You Think!)

Ever wondered how some families seem to travel all the time without breaking the bank? They’re probably using points and miles! If you’ve thought about diving into the points and miles world but felt a little overwhelmed, I’ve got you. The truth is, it’s only as complicated as you make it! Whether you’re looking for a simple way to save on family vacations or you’re ready to go all-in, I’m here to help you get started.

Here are three essential steps to kick off your points and miles journey and make family travel more affordable.

Step 1: Start with a Credit Card That Offers a Welcome Bonus and Transferable Points

The easiest way to get started is by signing up for a credit card that offers both a welcome bonus and transferable points. These welcome bonuses give you a head start with a big stash of points, and transferable points let you choose from different airline and hotel partners, making your points stretch further.

If you’re brand new to points and miles, the entire Internet agrees this one is the best beginner card. It’s straightforward, and the points transfer to travel partners like Hyatt, where you’ll get incredible value. This is the perfect beginner card that gets you into the points and miles game with minimal fuss.

Step 2: Hit the Minimum Spend with Your Usual Purchases

One of the most common questions I get is, “How do I meet the minimum spend requirement without overspending?” The key is simple: use your card for everyday purchases—groceries, gas, bills, school supplies, and anything you’d normally buy. There’s no need to go beyond your budget; just swap out your debit card for your rewards card, and you’ll meet the minimum spend in no time.

Plus, by using your card regularly, you’ll be on your way to earning even more points. Consistent spending is key, but you must pay on time. As long as you aren’t negating any benefits by paying interest— those points will add up faster than you might expect.

Step 3: Wait 90 Days, Then Rinse and Repeat (and Stay Organized!)

Once you’ve hit the minimum spend and received the welcome bonus, take a breath and wait about 90 days before applying for a new card. Spacing out applications helps protect your credit score and keeps things manageable. Many people are a bit more aggressive with this and are just fine, but 90 days is the safe bet.

This is how I stay organized, make sure I’m spacing out my cards appropriately and keep track of my 5/24 status.

If you want to level up your points strategy, consider using a "Player 2" (usually a partner or spouse). This means you can double your points potential by having them apply for their own cards and earn bonuses too. You’ll be surprised at how quickly your points can accumulate with this strategy in place.

Bonus Step: Spend Those Points and Start Traveling

Now for the fun part—redeeming your points! Once you’ve built up a good balance, it’s time to book that dream trip. Whether you’re thinking of a weekend getaway or an international adventure, there are endless ways to use points and miles to stretch your travel budget.

And remember, there are levels to this game. You can start with one or two cards, then explore more advanced strategies like adding business cards or looking for high-value redemptions. Most people don’t realize you can qualify for a business card with only a side hustle- there is not a minimum business size. Here’s instructions if you want to know more about that. Business cards are a huge part of my families strategy- The sky's the limit!

Why Welcome Offers and Transferable Points Matter

When it comes to getting the most out of your points, welcome offers and transferable points are game-changers. Welcome offers give you a strong start, and transferable points allow you to get the very most out of your points. You can learn more about why transferrable points matter here.

Final Thoughts: Getting Started Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated

Here’s the truth: points and miles are only as complicated as you make them. You don’t have to go all-in at once—start small, find what works best for your lifestyle, and enjoy the journey. There are levels to the points and miles world, and you can choose which level you want to operate at.

With tools like Travel Freely and Monarch Money, you can stay organized, track spending, and monitor annual fees so you never miss a deadline. Remember, the more organized you are, the more you’ll get out of this strategy.
